The brief here was to produce consistently-styled artwork for a box set of three DVDs. This will include the covers, the on-disc designs, and the slipcase that contains them. The box set is entitled “Jazz on Film” and will contain three DVDs featuring performances by three jazz musicians from a provided list. The ones I selected were Art Tatum, Lester Young and Wes Montgomery.
I embraced that idea of only juxtaposing the hands of the musicians as I have never seen something like this out here. And I think the inspirations I took for this project are hugely reflected in these iterations... Significant leading texts, one image as background but being juxtaposed by itself, the black & white images referring to jazz beginnings and the use of yellow colour as I highly associated with happiness/joy and in most of the musician’s pictures I selected, were always smiling...
Following the same principles, juxtaposing the background image, in the slipcase, but in this case empty hands... These reflect the three musicians in the DVD set as well as the mentioned sensation of movement in a fixed image. I was lucky enough to find the perfect image for this matter. That flash not only represents a good-looking photo but also in a metaphorical way the blessed hands of the musicians...The mythical ray of talented souls...
